Olive oil routes

A hallmark of the Mediterranean

Hardly anything compares to this opaque, dark liquid; it is absolutely unique. A hallmark of the Mediterranean, associated with the idea of health, gastronomic pleasure, and above all, a serene, carefree old age. Since then, it has flowed forth cloudy and commanding, unusually bitter in taste, but with an extraordinary aroma, making it an admirable accompaniment to many excellent dishes. The most valuable vegetable fat in the human diet. A personal care product, a remedy for various ailments, considered by many to be a panacea, an elixir of life. A divine fruit. Flowing gold.

Besides numerous written records, there is also much material evidence: remnants of various old olive oil manufactories along the entire west coast of Istria, particularly on the Brijuni archipelago, in the towns of Barbariga, Poreč, and Červar Porat. Near these manufactories, veritable industrial areas were established for amphora production. It is only natural that large olive groves were planted, namely with the native local varieties (bjelica, karbonera, buža, etc.).
