Ulysses Theatre
A dreamlike vision of a theatre on an uninhabited island
The Ulysses Theatre was founded by the actor and director Rade Šerbedžija and the writer Borislav Vujčić. It was inaugurated in 2001 by the renowned British film and stage actress Vanessa Redgrave at a benefit concert with the Mostar Sinfonietta.
The first production was Shakespeare's King Lear, directed by Lenka Udovički and starring Rade Šerbedžija in the title role. A small production team led by Tatjana Aćimović embarked on a journey to bring to life a dreamlike idea of a theater on an uninhabited island, little suspecting that this production would achieve cult status and be performed year after year. What began as an experiment has evolved into an annual summer festival with an increasing number of productions and cultural events.
Several locations within the Austro-Hungarian coastal fortress Fort Minor on the island of Mali Brijun have been used as a natural stage backdrop. For over a decade, it has captivated audiences from around the world, bringing together artists from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Great Britain, the USA, and Georgia.
