Whenever you’re staying in BO Hotel, you will discover the beautiful old town of Palma right from its heart. But we have thought of a new way to offer you interesting recommendations and more tips about this beautiful island we’re lucky enough to call ‘home’ and will now offer you some articles that will go by ‘Rent a car for a day and go to…’ What we would like to achieve is for you to get to know the entire island, as you will quickly see that there is a lot to see all over Mallorca.

Today we would love for you to discover one of Mallorca’s most impressive natural parks. So…

Rent a car and go to… ‘S’Albufera Natural Park in Alcudia’

About 5 kilometres south of Port d’Alcudia in Mallorca’s northwest the S’Albufera wetlands amaze visitors every day with incredible bird watching, being a paradise for nature enthusiasts. S’Albufera, the largest and most important wetland area in the Balearics, is a former lagoon separated from the sea by a belt of dunes, which for many centuries – but especially in the last two as a result of human influence – has filled up with sediments converting it into an extensive flood plain. The Natural Park affords protection to some 1708 hectares of marshes and dunes.

The name derives from the Arabic for ‘lagoon‘, but the site has been exploited since Roman times. A British company, which subsequently went bankrupt, drained the wetlands for agriculture in the l9th century; the network of canals dates from this time.

Birdwatchers come to Mallorca from all over Europe to see rare migrants here like Montagu’s harriers and Eleanora’s falcons; species breeding here include stonechats, moustached warblers and the long-eared owl. Ospreys leave their breeding sites on the cliffs to come here to fish; peregrines and hoopoes live here all year round.

The basis of S´Albufera´s ecological richness is water. The virtually permanent inundation of much of the Natural Park provides favourable conditions for vegetation growth and variety according to the depth of water, proximity of the sea and type of terrain. The range of plant species gives cover and food to a multitude of animals, which in turn are food for many more. Due to the abundance of water the diversity of living organisms (known as biodiversity by scientists) is very high, indeed S´Albufera’s suite of ecosystems supports the greatest biodiversity of any site in the Balearics.

Not to miss in Palma: have a llonguet

The beautiful capital city of the Balearic Islands, Palma de Mallorca, also happens to be our home. At BO Hotel we are lucky enough to have a great staff working hard every day to offer our clients the most comprehensive overview of everything Palma has to offer. The existence of our blog ‘city-lovers’ has always been the extra-way we have to show our clients and the world the cosmopolitan city Palma is.

This is why we have thought of a new way to present all kinds of activities, sightseeing and pretty much just special things to do when in Palma. Today we inaugurate our new section ‘not to miss in Palma’. And to start our list of musts in this city, we want to make sure you will not leave Palma without having a ‘llonguet’.

Not to miss in Palma

A ‘llonguet’ is an artisan Majorcan bread that has been produced in local bakeries for centuries. Even though the ingredients are the same as always (flour, water, olive oil, salt and yeast), the great secret is in the way they are handled and mixed.

The ‘llonguet’ is an oval-shaped type of bread roll, with a unique texture. Traditionally, llonguets were the first to go in the oven; bakers tested the temperature with them and they also released moisture into the oven.

Llonguets are particularly good with tomato, olive oil and Majorcan cheese. You will find ‘llonguets’ at every traditional Majorcan bakery. But even though you’ll find llonguets at every bakery, we strongly recommend for you to visit some of the traditional Palmesan cafés and bars where you’ll get warm and cold variations of this delicious bread roll. Some of our favourite spots to try a llonguet are Bar Bosch, Bar Tony (Plaza Sta. Eulalia) , Bar Isleño (Santa Catalina) or Es Vaixell (Portitxol).

If you need some information about the city, where to find these bakeries and bars or any additional insider knowledge of Palma, please don’t hesitate to approach our team at the front desk, as we will be delighted to share some of our best tips with all of you!

Mallorca’s most exclusive marinas

The Island of Mallorca is known all over the world for the wide range of activities you can experience while visiting it. Here in Mallorca you will be able to enjoy a lovely hike in middle of beautiful natural scenery, practice sports like golfing or cycling, shopping in Palma’s old town or enjoying the Majorcan gastronomy in first-class restaurants.

But today we would like to highlight two of the most exclusive and luxurious marinas there are in Mallorca for you to go visit.

We’ll start with Puerto Portals, probably the most famous marina in Mallorca due to the high-level of glamour and over 30 years of history. Located in an exclusive location at the bay of Portals Nous, this marina is located 10 kilometres away from Palma’s city centre. When it comes down to nautical services, it has 679 moorings from 8 to 60 meters in length, a nautical school, supermarket, gas station and all necessary nautical services for yachts and boats.

But Puerto Portals is also famous for its chic stores, excellent restaurants with all kind of gastronomic treats and for its sophisticated night life. This marina remains open the whole year and is also very famous for its first-class events, such as the Classic Oris Rally, the Sunset Market and the lovely Christmas market.

At BO Hotel we recommend for you to visit Puerto Portals, one of the most famous and important marinas of the Mediterranean and once you’re there, enjoy a lovely meal at the Ritzi Puerto Portals where you’ll find Italian-Mediterranean fusion cuisine, incredible sea views and a professional service.

On the other hand, we would like to highlight the luxurious Port Adriano, a contemporary design and art work by the architect Philippe Stark. It is located in Mallorca’s Southeast, in the municipality of El Toro. It has 492 moorings, many nautical Service offices, nautical school, offers sailing school, diving lessons and even an artificial beach.

But this marina has built up a name in the international scene by the luxurious Experience surrounding the moorings on the 4.000 sqm of leisure complex. With 52 luxury shops, high-class restaurants, sophisticated bars and an underground parking of 240 places, Port Adriano has become another ‘it place’ on the Island.

When visiting Port Adriano, we would like to recommend for you to visit some of the special and cool events taking place all over the year at this marina: gastronomic fairs such as ‘Food Passion’, Christmas ice rink, concerts, etc. You can check out the program by visiting their web.
